Loving Our Cities is a 501c3 community development corporation serving as the community engagement arm of The Perfecting Church with a mission to enhance the quality of life where we live, work, serve and worship. Inspired by a guiding principle that “Church is not a building,” Loving Our Cities seeks to mobilize people and partners to “Be the Church” in addition to attending one by addressing needs in marginalized communities locally and abroad.

About the Program
The Loving Our Cities Freedom School is a summer education enrichment program grounded in the nationally recognized Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) Freedom Schools model. Designed for communities where quality academic programming is limited, cost-prohibitive, or simply out of reach, Freedom School creates a joyful and rigorous environment where every child is seen, celebrated, and challenged to grow.
Through the Integrated Reading Curriculum (IRC), daily Harambee! celebrations, service-learning projects, and enrichment activities, scholars in grades 3-8 build reading skills while developing confidence, cultural pride, and a lifelong love of learning.
What Scholars Experience
- Literacy & Curriculum
The CDF Integrated Reading Curriculum develops critical thinking, reading fluency, and a love of literature through culturally affirming texts. Daily Harambee!
Each morning begins with an energizing, community-building celebration that sets the tone for joyful, motivated learning.Safe & Affirming Space
A culturally responsive environment ensures every scholar feels included, respected, and supported throughout the day.Servant Leadership
Scholars are mentored by college-age Servant Leader Interns who model academic excellence, community care, and civic responsibility.Enrichment & Field Trips
Afternoon activities, guest readers, and field trips extend learning beyond the classroom and connect scholars to their broader community.Family Engagement
Regular family nights, parent orientations, and open communication keep caregivers connected and invested in their scholar’s journey.
Our Commitment
Loving Our Cities Freedom School is more than a summer program, it is a movement. Rooted in the legacy of the Civil Rights era Freedom Schools, every component is designed to remind scholars that their minds matter, their stories matter, and their futures are worth fighting for. We are committed to equity, excellence, and the belief that access to transformative education is a right, not a privilege.
Program runs 6 weeks each summer for grades 3-8
